  • occupies the subaponeurotic space (below the aponeurosis)
  • loosely connects the epicranial aponeurosis to the periosteum of the skull (also called the pericranium)
  • contains a few small arteries (not shown on this picture)
  • contains emissary veins which are valveless – this means that blood can flow in both directions
